How the day works

Same-day surgery runs on timing. Here's what each stage asks of you.

Before your surgery

A nurse reaches out one to two days ahead to confirm the details and answer questions.

  • A nurse calls to take a brief health history and confirm your arrival time.
  • Tell your surgeon about any vitamins, supplements, aspirin, or blood thinners you take.
  • Your surgeon arranges any pre-op bloodwork or medical clearance directly.
  • Develop a cough, sore throat or fever, please contact your surgeon immediately.

The night before

A few simple rules keep your surgery on schedule and reduce the risk of complications.

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight — including gum and mints.
  • Skip medications after midnight unless your physician tells you otherwise.
  • No smoking or alcohol for 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Arrange your ride home in advance — responsible adult friend or family member.

Day of surgery

Come prepared and give yourself extra time before your scheduled slot.

  • Arrive on time for scheduled procedure.
  • Leave jewelry, watches, and cash at home.
  • Bring your insurance cards and photo ID.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes you can slip on easily.

After surgery

Recovery happens in two stages before you're cleared to head home.

  • You leave with written discharge instructions and the nurse will walk you through it.
  • A nurse will reach out to the family member or responsible adult once you're ready.
  • A nurse will call you the day after your surgery to see how you are feeling and to answer any questions or concerns.
  • For any reason you are experiencing any problems following surgery, please call your physician.
